Can we simulate piano playing convincingly? In other words, if we have a moderate level of skill in piano playing, can we give the appearance of being a professional piano performer instantly? This is an interesting topic of discussion. Some argue for the possibility, while others question why we would need to feign expertise. In my opinion, consistent imitation over time, practicing every day, might afford us the opportunity to genuinely acquire the skills. Let me illustrate this with an example.
For instance, when we play a phrase such as an ascending arpeggio that necessitates a relaxed wrist and a graceful arm movement, it is plausible to consider mimicking it. Through repeated practice, these imitated actions can evolve into genuine pianistic gestures. This is particularly beneficial because many novices tend to exhibit nervousness and stiffness in their wrist movements. From this perspective, feigning proficiency is not only advantageous for honing musical expression but also for strengthening our ability to convey emotions through music, making the experience more engaging.
